VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR TASK FORCE ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING & ON FUND BALANCE POLICY
Release Date: May 29, 2006

I am planning to establish the following citizen task forces to help the town address two important issues:
AFFORDABLE HOUSING---If you are interested in serving on an Affordable Housing Committee, please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. The committee will help the town develop policy re:creation of additional units of affordable housing.  44 units of affordable housing will be built if the proposed Avalon development (off of Taxter Road) is built. The committee will be asked to help the town develop criteria to be used in selecting families for these units. Should priority be given to volunteer firefighters, ambulance corp members or teachers? We're working with Ardsley reviewing a request to turn over the foreclosed Waterwheel property for affordable housing for volunteer firefighters/ambulance corp members/police.
FUND BALANCE---I am also planning to create a task force to work with the Comptroller and Town Supervisor in developing a proposed fund balance policy. Fund balance is surplus funds. One of the reasons why the town's bond rating is at the highest level ever is because we have a healthy fund balance. In some communities fund balance is used to reduce taxes during election years. Taxes go up the following year. That's not good planning. Having a fund balance policy will help guide the Town Board and future Town Boards to be fiscally prudent and not to play politics with the fund balance. If you have an accounting or budget background- I'd appreciate it if you would give up one or two nights before October (when I release the budget), helping in the development of a policy statement.
