New Veteran Legislation

The Greenburgh Town Boardunanimously approved legislation on March 22, 2006increasing veteran exemptions. The following are some facts about the new law. It’s important that we recognize those who serve our country…who risk their lives for all of us.

THE NEW LAW….

Current program:

The total number of veterans receiving this exemption currently is 1,440.

The total exempt amount attributable to all of these veterans is 2,000,384.

The average exempt amount is 1,389 in Assessed Value.

The average tax dollar savings for each veteran is $ 223.00 for regular veterans and $375.00 for veterans who served in a combat theatre.

Under the new program:

The total number of veterans to receive the benefit is expected to remain the same at 1,440.

The total exempt amount attributable to all of these veterans will be approximately 2,365,734 ( represents an increase of 365,350 )

The average exempt amount for each veteran will be approximately 1,643  ( represents an increase of  254 )

The average tax dollar savings for each veteran is $ 261.00 for regular veterans and $435.00 for veterans who served in a combat theatre.

The increase in tax dollars to every taxpayer in the Town with an average assessment of 15,000 is approximately 90 cents to $ 1 dollar per year.

The exemption does not impact school district, fire district and other special sewer districts.
