In 1983, when I was first elected a member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, I started a practice of being sworn into office at various elementary schools. The grade school teachers select a student to hold the bible when I take the oath of office. I recently received a call from Lendel Marshall, one of the grade school students who held the bible for me a number of years ago. Mr. Marshall remembered the ceremony and gave me some good news: he was recently elected President of the Woodlands High School Student Council. Lendel invited me to attend his own swearing in ceremony which is scheduled to take place on January 20th at 1:15 PM. This week I will continue the tradition of holding swearing in ceremonies at local schools. It’s my hope that the students who attend these ceremonies will consider getting involved in public service – just like Lendel has.
