They will be honored at a ceremony Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Greenburgh Public Library, 300 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford, at an event jointly sponsored with the United Nations Association Westchester Chapter and cosponsored by the library. Advance registration is requested: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/human-rights-day-70th-anniversary-of-the-universal-declaration-of-human-rights-tickets-52501285759 The free event is in observance of Human Rights Day, the annual international celebration of the UN's 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being -- regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages. “The people we are honoring are the local unsung heroes in our town who have lived by the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said Stu Hackel, chair of the Human Rights Committee. “At this time, when our own democracy is threatened as never before, we celebrate these rights and their meaning for all generations and all peoples." He added: “We are honored to be partners with the UN Association of Westchester and the Greenburgh Public Library in creating this unique event that links the struggle for human rights around the world.” Similarly, Patrick Sciarratta, communications chair of the UNA USA Westchester Chapter, said, “We are proud to join together locally with the Greenburgh, Human Rights Advisory Committee and nationally with Rock Your World to present this very special event. I know that such events with active partners will make this a very special and meaningful commemoration.” A presentation will also be made by Harshita Shet, a freshman at Woodlands High School who established Dignity for Girls to address the global and domestic lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Through her work, she is raising awareness of this issue and striving to reduce the mental burden, truancy, and dropout rates that accompany this problem. The program will also feature presentations from: students from Woodlands High School and from Yonkers. The award recipients are the following: · Colby Jenkins-Caesar is the personification of a selfless giver. Her many activities include work with seniors, children and food pantries. The Greenburgh Human Rights Advisory Committee, created in 2015, includes people from all parts of Greenburgh who work to protect human rights by advancing racial, social, ethnic, gender, economic, cultural, and environmental justice. The committee advises the Town government on human rights issues and we provide informational and educational forums to promote respect for the worth of each individual. Although the Committee does not conduct legal investigations or issue findings about human rights violations, it can pass on reports of possible violations to other agencies. The committee’s meetings are open to the public and generally take place the third Thursday of each month beginning at 7 pm. at Greenburgh Town Hall.
