Airport Flight Paths
Release Date: May 20, 2007

CountyLegislatorTom Abinanti should be applauded for his efforts to address proposed airplane flight paths in and around Westchesterairports. I have also been receiving complaints from residents about flight paths over Greenburgh and the area. This is a major quality of life concern.
I will be sending a similar letter to Steve Kelley of the FAA. Please let me know if you have experienced quality of life problems re: airplane flights over your home. E mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com

ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY CHAIR ABINANTI SEEKS FAA HEARINGS IN WESTCHESTERCOUNTY

Westchester County Legislator, Thomas J. Abinanti (Greenburgh -D, I, WF), is calling on the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct hearings in Westchester County on its proposed plans to change airplane flight paths in and out of metropolitan area airports.

In his letter, Legislator Abinati noted that the hearings conducted in Stamford, CT., and in Queens, NYdid not provide sufficient opportunity for Westchesterresidents to comment on the Preferred Alternative Redesign plan, which will have a significant environmental impact on WestchesterCounty.  He also requested an extension of the comment period.

“The FAA should hear Westchesterresidents before its new plan to concentrate flights makes it impossible to hear anything that anybody has to say in Westchester,” said Legislator Abinanti.

Dear Mr. Kelley,

As the Chair of the Environment and Energy Committee at the Westchester County Board of Legislators, I review numerous projects affecting environmental issues in the County.  I respectfully request that you hold public hearings in WestchesterCountyto fully evaluate impacts from the FAA’s proposed Preferred Alternative Redesign plan.

Many residents have expressed their concern to me about the significant impact on WestchesterCountythat will result from the proposed changes cited in the April 3 “Noise Mitigation Report.” These changes will double the number of flights in a narrower flight path, thus concentrating noise pollution impacts, including upon a state nature preserve.

The public comment period will close tomorrow, yet no hearings were held in WestchesterCounty.  The New YorkStatepublic hearing was in Queens, which is not an easily accessible location for Westchesterresidents.  The single Connecticuthearing in Stamforddid not provide sufficient opportunity to address the concerns of Westchesterresidents.

In addition to holding a public hearing in WestchesterCounty, I request that you extend the period for public comment to allow sufficient input.  Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Abinanti
