COMMEMORATION OF THE 225TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH TO YORKTOWN---GREENBURGH PLAYED A ROLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY
RE-ENACTORS TO CAMPATODELL HOUSE TONIGHT…PARADE TOMORROW, CEREMONY AT TOWN BOARD MEETING TOMORROW
Frank Jazzo, Town Historian, is involved in the commemoration of the 225th Anniversary of the March to Yorktown. He invites you and your family to re-live American history.
The re-enactors will be in Greenburgh today and tomorrow. Greenburgh was the location of the Philipsburg Encampment from July 6th through August 18-19th, 1781, the adjoining camps of the American and French forces under Washington and Rochambeau. The encampment covered a large area on both sides of Sprain Brook in what is now Unincorporated Greenburgh and the northern part of Ardsley. In effect, it became the staging ground for the final march to Virginia and the decisive Siege of Yorktown there.
The re-enactors have been invited by Robert J. Stackpole, President of the N.Y. Chapter of the SAR & Co-Chair of Greenburgh's W3R Committee, to camp on the Odell House property on Ridge Road, which was used as General Rochambeau's Headquarters during the six-week encampment. The plan now is for the re-enactors to camp there on July 5th & 6th and they have said that the public is welcome to visit them and hear about their experiences and the proposed continuation of the march in August.
The Town Supervisor, Paul Feiner, and the Greenburgh Town Board members plan to honor the March to Yorktown re-enactors at the beginning of the 7:15pm Town Board meeting on Thursday, July 6th. The re-enactors will be at the parking lot of the R.J.Bailey School on Hillside Avenue at 5:45pm along with Explorer Scouts from the Greenburgh Police Dept. & the Fairview Fire Dept. Any other scout groups or individuals who would like to walk with them the two block distance along Hillside Avenue to the Greenburgh Town Hall are welcome, but should be at Bailey at 5:45pm. Following their introduction at the beginning of the Town Board meeting, the re-enactors will return to their campsite at the Odell House property.
