Solar, utility wires underground and native plant discussions coming up
Release Date: February 04, 2019

3 IMPORTANT MEETINGS ON THE ENVIRONMENT: Wed: should Con Ed wires be placed underground

MEETING THIS TUESDAY AT 6:30 PM AT GREENBURGH LIBRARY ON SOLAR

MEETING FEB 13 ABOUT NATIVE PLANTS DOBBS FERRY LIBRARY

This Wednesday there will be a very important discussion at the Dobbs Ferry Library at 6:30 PM --discussion on whether the village should place electrical wires in their downtown area underground. Costs/benefits of burying wires underground will be discussed.  Will this increase safety, reliability and help a thriving downtown become more successful? Con Ed, village representatives, arborists will attend.

Although the discussion will focus on Dobbs Ferry what happens in Dobbs could influence other communities and business districts. I have been pushing to have Con Ed place wires underground since 2006. A link to a NY Times article about the issue is posted below:  Many people, myself included, feel that if Con Ed places wires underground there will be fewer power outages.

Community Solar - A Triple Win Against Climate Change

Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 6:30pm
Greenburgh Public Library, 300 Tarrytown Rd, Elmsford, NY 10523

Community Solar

Community Solar is a great new way in NY state to rapidly deploy solar energy so that every consumer can take part. Typically, a business hosts a solar installation with scores or even hundreds of solar panels, whose electricity is fed into the grid. Then, consumers subscribe to the installation, each taking a share of the electricity. This arrangement is a win for the consumer, who gets renewable energy at a discount, a win for the host, whose investment gets a good return, and a win for our communities that get home grown, sustainable, made in America energy, and for our environment, from serious greenhouse gas reductions. Michael Mollin of Community Power Partners will show consumers how they win, Doug Hertz of Sunrise Solar Solutions will tell potential solar hosts how to unlock property assets they never knew they had, and Nina Orville of Abundant Efficiency will address other aspects of Community Solar. Light refreshments will be served.

Native Plants at Home

Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 7:00pm
Dobbs Ferry Library,  55 Main St, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522

Native plants can provide your yard with year-round beauty while providing essential habitats and food sources for wildlife. Micah Slavkin, of Symbiotic Ecological Design, will discuss what makes a plant "native," why you should consider incorporating them into your garden, and which native plants are best suited for the home landscape. This program is in partnership with the Greenburgh Nature Center and will be held at the Dobbs Ferry Public Library.
