This is the time to apply for internships... the town has great internship opportunities
Release Date: February 04, 2018

Check out the you tube video  link posted below which highlights  last summer's internship experiences.

This is the time of year when students should start to think about summer! If your son or daughter is interested in learning about town government they might want to consider an internship with the town. We try to provide interns with interesting experiences and hope that some will decide on careers in public service.  If your son or daughter would like to meet or talk on the phone please have them e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.   If your son or daughter would like to apply for internships elsewhere, I would also be happy to talk to them--and provide them with advice. My cell phone is 914-438-1343.

PAUL FEINER

2018 Greenburgh Town Hall Summer Internship Program

Approximately ten years ago, Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, Town Attorney Tim Lewis and Town Clerk Judith Beville created the Greenburgh Town Hall Summer Internship Program in response to several requests from area high school and college students seeking a summer internship experience.  Since then, the program has grown from less than ten students to thirty, in 2017.  Over the course of six to eight weeks, students work on projects related to local government issues that engage them in building upon their research, reading, writing and speaking skills as well as the opportunity to produce public service announcements and video presentations related to their projects to be aired on cable access television.  A major goal for the program, states Paul, is… “For students to take ownership in specific projects as they identify a need in the community, come up with solutions, organize programs or projects, interact with elected officials and community leaders and, hopefully, get interviewed by reporters.”

Program Vision:  The coordinators envision an internship in which students are actively engaged in projects and experiences that represent authentic local government issues and concerns.

Program Mission:  Our mission is to introduce and expose high school and college students to the work environment of local government through projects, guest speakers and field trips with an emphasis on developing and building skills in communications, leadership and teamwork.

Daily Components:  Over the course of the program week, Monday through Thursday, 10:00am to 3:00pm, students are involved in work groups as well as placements in various town departments/ offices, between 10:00am and 12:00noon and come together as a larger group, 1:00-3:00pm, to work on group projects with both short term and long term expectations.  During this time, students break into smaller work groups with specific tasks and project goals.  Included in their weekly schedule is to research upcoming speakers and develop interview questions in preparation for the visit by guest speakers, research and report on government related issues, learn about public/private partnerships and develop PSA’s (Public Service Announcements) designed to inform the public about an initiative or provide information related to an assignment or project that purposely focuses on improving the quality of life for others.  There is an emphasis, as well, on guest speakers, workshops and daily practice related to developing speaking, presentation and communications skills as well as leadership and teamwork.

Summer 2017 guest speakers and presenters, with many years of experience and acquired expertise in the areas of education, business and professional careers, engaged students in projects such as preparing public information presentations (PSA’s and printed) designed to increase awareness and understanding about Alzheimer’s and local resources that are available to support and assist family members.  Through a partnership with Mercy College, interns assisted professors with designing outreach materials to veterans for the purpose of inviting them to explore a professional degree opportunity for teaching in the growing career areas of science, technology, engineering and math.  Interns learned resume writing, had opportunities to interview high profile individuals in international film production such as J.T. Rogers and with global research/writing experiences such as Joe Queenan, a writer, for several decades, with the Wall Street Journal.  Local speakers included Hugh McAuley who taught several workshops on presenting to an audience, Lynn Beville, who inspired students by engaging them in learning strategies for overcoming fear and discomfort when speaking, Dee DelBello and Marta Basso, who both stressed leadership, Denise Beville who taught resume writing and resume building as well as several other impactful speakers.  Elaine Rogers of Toastmasters, International, taught interns how to create an individualized introduction for speaking, publically or for college/job applications.  Interns experienced working in the following Town departments:  Offices of the Town Attorney, Tax Receiver, Engineering, Community Development & Conservation and the Police Department.  Interns in the Legal Department were immersed in learning about town issues that involve the legal intervention.  A field trip to learn the importance of “giving back” has become an annual finale and one that resounds in the reflections shared by students.  In all, students expressed that their internship was a valuable learning experience.  Interns produced videos and a power point presentation documenting their summer internship experience.  Also, attached is a summary video prepared by Janelle Wallace, Assistant Director, Cable Access Television in the Town of Greenburgh, who guides and assists interns through their learning in the Cable Access Television Studio at Town Hall.
