COMING SOON--GREENBURGH WANTS TO FOLLOW SCARSDALE'S LEAD AND ESTABLISH FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING CENTER
Release Date: May 12, 2017

COMING SOON  FOOD SCRAP RECYCLING INITIATIVE—similar to Scarsdale’s

Early this year the village of Scarsdale became the first community in Westchester to accept resident food scraps for recycling at no charge. A drop off location was established at the Scarsdale recycling center. Last week I stopped by and was amazed at how many people participate in this initiative. During the short time that I was at the drop off location a number of residents stoppped by dropping off food scraps at the site.

Food scraps account for approximately 15% of municipal  solid waste, with composting such organic materials being an important waste reduction strategy. The Edgemont & Hastings on Hudson school districts are currently teaching students how to turn food into compost.   It’s successful. The time has come for adults to follow the lead of some students and to start recycling food.

We will be working with the Greenburgh Nature Center trying to come up with a plan to implement a similar program. Once implemented, Greenburgh residents will be able to drop off food waste at a food composting location in town. We are currently reviewing possible locations.  And have invited representatives of Scarsdale’s committee to meet with the Town Board and community and to explain their successful program.    Are you interested in helping out? Please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. I’d like to implement this initiative this year.

The following photo’s were taken by Margaret Goldberg,Executive Director of the Greenburgh Nature Center who would would like to partner with the town and make this a very successful initiative. The photo’s were taken yesterday during our site visit.
