THE Greenburgh Police department released their Part I report for 2016 Good news and bad news...
DATE: January 24, 2017 INCIDENT: 2016 Crime Statistics
Chief McNerney today released statistics on Part I Criminal Offenses for the year 2016. Part I Offenses are considered serious crimes by the United States Department of Justice. Included in this category are Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Homicide, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft, Robbery and Rape.
During the year 2016, a total of 839 Part I Offenses were reported to the department. This represents a 26% increase in total Part I Offenses that is directly attributable to 38% increase in reported larcenies. The increase in larcenies is due to increased larcenies reported via internet scams and an increase in reported larcenies from unlocked vehicles during the overnight hours.
It should be noted that the Town saw a significant decrease in most serious crime categories. Most notable crime trends include a decrease of 36% in reported motor vehicle thefts and a decrease of 33% in reported burglaries.
The 35 burglaries reported in 2016 represents the lowest total in at least 10 years. The department has instituted numerous proactive initiatives that has targeted the crime of burglary and significantly reduced the number of burglaries reported from a high of 121 in 2009. These initiatives have been enhanced by the department’s Burglary Task Force, Street Crime Unit and Community Policing Unit.
In reporting these statistics, the Greenburgh Police Department utilizes the New York State Incident Based Reporting System (NYSIBRS) as opposed to the Uniform Crime Reporting System (UCR) generally employed by police agencies in New York and throughout the nation.
