SUPERVISORS TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT

TEMPORARY WORK ASSIGNMENT FOR TOWN SUPERVISOR PAUL FEINER—water department

During the past year and a half I have time working in different departments. Today, (Friday, May 27) I spent the morning at the water department. What an interesting experience!

8 MILLION GALLONS…14 MILLION IN THE SUMMER…FIFTH CHEAPEST WATER TO BUY IN REGION

The Greenburgh Water department supplies about 8 million gallons of water a day to residents of Greenburgh and one million gallons a day to residents of the Villageof Irvington. During the summer months we supply as much as 14 million gallons of water to our customers.  Our biggest customer is Coca Cola –which purchases one million gallons a day of water for their plant at Fairview Park Drive.

39,000 people in unincorporated Greenburgh drink our water daily. Randy Cairns, who oversees the operations at the Water Department, told me that Greenburgh water is the fifth cheapest water to purchase out of 65 water companies in the area. We are substantially less than United Water (I reside in a small area of Greenburgh served by United Water so I’m a bit jealous!). Some people around the county pay double or triple what Greenburgh water costs. And—we’ve won water tasting contests so you’re not drinking an inferior product. While I’m proud of the fact that our prices are lower than most – there are legitimate reasons why 4 other water departments out of 65 undersell us. We have hills—we have to pump water to higher elevations. And, economy of scale.

WATER DEPARTMENT PAID FOR BY CUSTOMERS, NOT TAXES

The Greenburgh water department, with a budget of about 5 million dollars, is paid for by water customers, not taxpayers. The town bills the water department for services provided.

MY DAY INCLUDED BACTERIA TESTING, VISIT TO PUMP STATIONS (IRVINGTONNOW GETS WATER FROM GREENBURGH, NOT RESERVOIR)

My morning at the water department included a visit to the Social Security office on KnollwoodRoad. We tested cold water for bacteria. The water department samples water around town to make sure that the water is disinfected. We also visited the Rumbrook pump station. Over a year ago we built a new plant that provides water to residents of the Villageof Irvington. In the past Irvingtonresidents used to get water from a local reservoir. But, now we supply 100% of the water Irvingtonuses to the village. This water is coming from the Catskills.  Security camera’s monitor movement inside and around the plant.

We checked for turbidity-dirt in the water. We monitor turbidity and report the levels to the county. Fortunately, for Greenburgh, our turbidity levels are acceptable. The Catskills water is clean and healthy.

Our final stop for the day was at a local restaurant. A meter broke and had to be replaced. A seal is placed on the meter to make sure there is no tampering. The town does not charge for meter replacement if the meter breaks down. It costs about $96 to replace a meter. I also learned that a car hit a hydrant on Sprain Roadearly in the day. The town bills those who hit water hydrants for the damages—it could cost up to $2,000 to replace the hydrant.
