TOWN BOARD TO VOTE WED TO APPROVE BUTTERFLY ARBOR AT GREENBURGH NATURE CENTER
Release Date: October 11, 2015

EXCITING NEW INITIATIVE AT GREENBURGH NATURE CENTER

A NEW BUTTERFLY ARBOR TO BE BUILT USING NON TAXPAYER DOLLARS-

The Greenburgh Nature Center (Dromore Road off of Central Ave)  has asked the Town Board to approve a resolution this Wednesday authorizing the construction of a butterfly arbor at the Nature Center.  The Town Board is expected to approve the request at our Wednesday night Town Board meeting.

Private donations, not taxpayer dollars, will be used to pay for this new enhancement.   The nature center, a 33 acre preserve with trails, pond, gardens and a native plant meadow, currently serves about 80,000 visitors annually and  sponsorS numerous environmental education programs, after school events. A unique playground was built at the center a few years ago. The town owns the land that the nature center occupies.

The construction of the proposed butterfly arbor, to be situated in the native plant meadow, will enrich and enhance the Greenburgh Nature Center's outdoor nature education programs and events.

The arbor's unique and captivating design will allow us to utilize the space as a seasonal outdoor 'classroom' enhancing the nature education experience and to house our butterfly exhibit each summer.

The natural red cedar frame is designed to suspend butterfly netting when the exhibit is open.
Visitors will be able to view and observe native butterfly species in a welcoming and intimate space that will enrich the visitor's experience.

At other times of the year, with the butterfly netting removed, this permanent structure will serve as a focal point for the meadow and an open arbor where visitors can pause to take in the beauty of this unique place.'

Size would be approximately 36 ft in length, using tree trunk posts of cedar, 12 inches in diameter/16 ft
long.
We anticipate the arbor would be ready to welcome our visitors early 2016.
Tentative dates for our 2016 GNC Butterfly Exhibit would be from Sat 25 Jun through Sun 07 Aug.
Fees would apply.

This new butterfly arbor is, in my opinion, a fantastic initiative that will make a nature center visit an even more enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
