WATER IS SAFE--FOLLOW UP TO LETTER THAT WAS SENT OUT TO WATER CUSTOMERS RECENTLY...
I received some calls from residents who had received a letter from the water department about the quality of the drinking water. I received the following response from the Commissioner of Public Works.
PAUL FEINER
Please do not be concerned with the water. It is safe. The note you received is advising that a test of the water in a part of the Greenburgh system indicated the presence of bacteria (total coliform) last month. Of the 52 samples we took, 4 samples showed positive results for the bacteria. The presence of this bacteria is used as a sign to our operators that there may be a problem in the water treatment system or in the pipes and that we should test again for other bacteria. Whenever coliform bacteria is detected, additional sampling is performed to see if other bacteria of greater concern are present. Further sampling and testing showed the problem was resolved. If any bacteria of greater concern was found, everyone would have been immediately notified.
The letter sent to all our customers is required by our regulators, as our customers have a right to know about the quality of the drinking water. Again, if the results were of a greater concern, immediate information would be provided.
If you have any further questions, please call the water department.
