County cultural days are great...Town Bd t vote on Monday to name lower ball field for Frank Jazzo

Westchester County sponsors cultural heritage celebrations. I bicycled to the African American celebration at the Kensico Dam this afternoon. The music was terrific. Thousands of people attended. Great food, excellent vendors and information booths. I recommend that you and your families enjoy the other heritage days which are listed below:

  • Italian, July 27, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla
  • Indian, Aug. 3, 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla
  • Jewish Music Festival, Aug. 17, noon to 6 p.m., Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla
    Festivals will be held rain or shine. Seating is informal; bring blankets or folding chairs for seating on the lawn.

The Greenburgh Town Board will vote on the following resolution tomorrow evening at 7:30 PM naming the lower ball field in honor of Frank Jazzo. Frank, who is the Town Historian, has worked hard to make Greenburgh a better place to live. He has done a lot for our community and is most deserving of this recognition.

RESOLUTION NAMING THE LOWER BALL FIELD

AT EAST RUMBROOK PARK THE “FRANK JAZZO FIELD”

WHEREAS, the Town of Greenburgh has a park and recreation naming policy and under section

4 of the policy it states: “A park, field, or recreational facility may be named to honor an organization or a

person, but only to recognize extraordinary contribution or service to the unincorporated Greenburgh park

system or to the community. A living person may be honored in extraordinary cases, by the naming of a

field or recreation facility;” and

WHEREAS, on April 8, 2014, John Malone, a Greenburgh resident, proposed that the lower ball

field at East Rumbrook Park be named the “Frank Jazzo Field” in honor of Frank Jazzo for his many

years of productive volunteer contributions in the community; and

WHEREAS, in the mid 1960’s Frank Jazzo became part of a four-person recreation committee

for the Hillside-Wyndover Civic Association; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo served for a number of years as troop chairman for Greenburgh Boy

Scout Troop 65; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo coached youth sports (basketball, baseball and softball) from the 1960’s

through the 1990’s; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo in the 1970’s organized a team and coached in the Babe Ruth summer

league and later created the Greenburgh-Ardsley American Legion Baseball team that competed against

other Westchester County post teams (20 years of coaching); and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo was very instrumental working with other community members and

elected officials in acquiring and developing what is now known as Travis Hill Park; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo has been a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 1976

and a member since its inception; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo along with Fred Arone were responsible for convincing town officials

to renovate and redesign the lower ball field and construct the building overlooking the field for a press

box, concession and storage area at East Rumbrook Park in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo served on the 1987-1988 Greenburgh Bicentennial Commission Book

Committee; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo in 1991 was appointed to the Greenburgh Historic Preservation

Commission; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo in March 1992 became a trustee of the newly-created Town of

Greenburgh Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo in 1999 petitioned the Town to become a Hudson River Valley

Greenway community and has served as co-chairman of the Greenburgh Greenway Committee with

Robert J. Stockpole; and

WHEREAS, Frank Jazzo was appointed Town Historian in 2001; and

WHEREAS, at the June 4, 2014, Greenburgh Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, a

resolution was unanimously adopted recommending that the Town Board accept the proposal to name the

lower ball field at East Rumbrook Park the “Frank Jazzo Field;”

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Board of the Town of Greenburgh, at

recommendation of the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation and the unanimous recommendation of the

Greenburgh Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, supplemented by the Board’s own knowledge of his

remarkable life-long accomplishments, hereby names the lower ball field at East Rumbrook Park the

“Frank Jazzo Field,” to be formally bestowed at an a dedication ceremony to be planned by the

Department of Parks and Recreation.
