INCREASE INTEROPERABILITY OF POLICE RADIO
Release Date: January 14, 2005

I am pleased to report that the Town of Greenburghand the villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings, Irvingtonand Tarrytownare seeking to improve the ability of the police departments to work with each other. Presently, the seven police agencies that service the town of Greenburghoperate on four separate radio frequencies resulting in inefficiency and confusion while responding to each other’s request for mutual assistance and joint responses to major occurrences in any one of the involved jurisdictions. According to Greenburgh Police Chief John Kapica, police officers from more than one agency are assigned to respond to the same event, however, they are unable to communicate with each other as a result of lack of common technologies.  We have had situations where assisting officers from a neighboring jurisdiction passed the pursuit in the opposite direction because officers from a neighboring jurisdiction passed the pursuit in the opposite direction because they did not receive timely notification of the progress of the incident.

In recent years the Town and village police departments have been creative in partnering and sharing services on an unprecedented level, elevating their collective ability to deal with terrorist threats and improve the level of service delivered to their residents. These initiatives include a joint SWAT team, fully trained to deal with critical incidents such as the deployment of a weapon of mass destruction. We have formed a joint Drug and Alcohol Task Force which is a model of inter-agency cooperation throughout the tri-state area. This spring a joint Police Marine Unit will patrol and conduct rescue operations for the waters off the 11 miles of shoreline in the Hudson River.

The Town and six village police departments are seeking a grant from Congresswoman Nita Lowey to construct a common radio communications system. The cost: $944,000.    PAUL FEINER, GreenburghTownSupervisor
