UNSUNG HERO--Mayumi Kurihara, Junior Ardsley High--co president Silver Lining Club
Release Date: March 14, 2014

Last year I started a new feature: Unsung Heroes--highlighting some outstanding members of our community who have made the world a better place. I received this e mail about a Junior at Ardsley High School, Mayumi Kurihara--today's unsung hero.
I would appreciate it if you would nominate neighbors who reside in our community (including the villages) who do special things...E mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com    PAUL FEINER

I am president of Interfaith caring Community of Greenburgh ( founded in 1983) and I have been participating in Midnight run since its inception in 1984. I have worked with some amazing teens  over these 30 years filled with compassion for others and who focus their lives on doing kindness for those in need. - these are my heroes.  Some stand out – one is Mayumi Kurihara , who is presently  a junior at Ardsley High School and co-president of the Silver Lining club – a community service club. I lead  a  monthly Midnight Run and Mayumi is always there. We get to NYC at about 10PM on Saturday night and leave at about 12:30-1am. We bring food clothing and more important  respect and friendship. Mayumi offers a positive energy which is so powerful that it breaks down all barriers. She often reminds me to stay longer and reach out further and we have been together on some bitterly cold and rainy nights. Mayumi also organized volunteers for an annual Halloween party for Hope’s Door held at my house, organized a food collection at Decicco's market in Ardsley for Hudson Valley Community Services and  cooks monthly at Ardsley United Community Church for Yonkers Sharing Community. In her spare time she has organized a school-wide clothing drive at AHS  for Midnight Run, organized a bake sale for the benefit of Children’s Village and led her club to participate in Ardsley Care’s Day --- all of this since last September. She is my hero. You will have an opportunity to meet Mayumi – she  and friends will be greeting guests at a concert sponsored by Interfaith for the benefit of Midnight Run at 3PM  on March 30 at South Church in Dobbs Ferry . Please come Alan Shapiro.
