WE'RE GOING TO KEEP SANITATION SCHEDULE-MONDAY GARBAGE WILL BE COLLECTED THURSDAY
Release Date: February 03, 2014

I met with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Public Works a short time ago. We decided to keep the sanitation schedule intact –will be less confusing. Residents who expected the garbage to be picked up on Monday (sanitation services were cancelled today due to the snow/safety concerns for employees) will have their garbage picked up on the regular scheduled day: Thursday. We will follow the calendar for the balance of the week.  People who live in the section of the town that gets garbage pickup on Tuesday will see no change in the schedule.  Recycling will take place on Wed (weather permitting).

Around 8 AM I posted an advisory to subscribers of our e list advising that sanitation is being cancelled today.  Some residents contacted me with a valid complaint: I should have posted the advisory earlier in the AM---before they left for work.  I spoke with the Commissioner and deputy and asked that the commissioner immediately post cancellation announcements on the web as soon as a decision is made.

I think that we need to improve communications when there are cancellations. Many people in the town don’t subscribe to our e list. And, don’t read info on the website. We need to reach those who don’t pay much attention to local news.  Later today the Commissioner of Public Works will send out a phone message to residents of unincorporated Greenburgh advising them of our plans for the rest of the week.

MY QUESTIONS TO YOU….

If we have to cancel sanitation services in the future should the Commissioner send an automatic phone message to every resident?

Should automatic phone messages be sent out every time there is a cancellation or should we make one call at the beginning of the season advising people to take a look at our website?

How early in the AM should telephone calls be made (today I received a call from my daughters school close to 5:30 AM indicating that school is being closed)?
Should we create an automatic phone call registry –phone calls would be made to only those who request them? We would leave everyone else alone.

Any other thoughts re: how to communicate better with the community would be appreciated.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

PAUL FEINER
