UNSUNG HERO- VINCENT REDA--student, volunteer, EMT, SNOW ANGEL, EAGLE SCOUT, CERT member, Etc
Release Date: December 29, 2013

During the past month I have been highlighting the accomplishments of some unsung Greenburgh heroes. Today’s unsung hero: Vincent Reda…

Volunteering has always been a big part of Vincent Reda's life. He turns 20 tomorrow. In 7th grade, he started a BINGO night at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. He took on a leadership role, secured volunteers and ran the weekly program for the next 5 years. He became attached to the residents as they also became attached to him. He often went to visit the residents.
During high School, Vincent continued to volunteer throughout the community. He was an active member in Greenburgh Youth Court, Member of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Captain of the Greenburgh Police Explorers and a volunteer for Ardsley Ambulance Corp. At 18, Vincent became an EMT to better serve the Ardsley Ambulance Corp. He is still an active volunteer when he returns home from college for breaks. He still attends police explorer meetings and assists the Police Explorer program at "Car Seat Details". Car Seat Details are set up to help properly secure child car seats for the safety of children. For the past several years, Vincent has been an active participant in Greenburgh's Snow Angel Program. During snow storms, he makes himself available to the elderly or sick residents for snow shoveling. He has brought several volunteers into this program. He has also helped elderly residents by bringing old TVs to the proper disposal area. He continues to provide this service when home on break from college. Vincent helped restore the 9-11memorial wall on Central Avenue. During Hurricane Irene, Vincent helped flood victims. Vincent is reliable and always "on call" to help his fellow neighbors. While maintain good grades in high school and being an typical teenager, he found time each week to volunteer and encourage his peers to also volunteer.
Vincent is an Eagle Scout. He engineered  a group to map out and asses the storm drains of Ardsley Village. This project helped Ardsley stay in compliance with New York State guidelines while saving the village money. He received an Award from the Mayor of Ardsley for his community service.
Vincent is a sophomore at Marist College in Poughkeepsie studying criminal justice and psychology. He works summers as a lifeguard to earn money for college yet still finds time each week to volunteer and give back to the community when he is home.  In recent weeks I have called on Vincent to help out with our snow angels program.  Volunteering has been and will continue to be a big part of Vincent's life.

Vincent is worthy of the honor of being named an unsung hero in Greenburgh. If you would like to nominate a special person for this honor- please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. It’s my hope that our unsung heroes will inspire others to do good things for others.
