You can watch Girl Scouts describe how they were able to persuade the police to improve safety
Release Date: June 13, 2013

If you want to watch the Greenville Girl Scouts (2670) on You Tube describe how they were able to persuade the police to make safety improvements at the Greenville School, watch the You Tube segment link. The girls are amazing!  One of the scouts advised the Town Board last night that she intends to run for President of the United States one day. Watch out Hillary!

STUDENTS AT GREENVILLE SCHOOL-WHO ARE MEMBERS OF GIRL SCOUT TROOP SUCCEED IN GETTING POLICE DEPT TO MAKE SAFETY IMPROVEMENT!  THEY ARE ROLE MODELS FOR OTHER STUDENTS- EFFECTIVE ADVOCATES

Girl Scout Troop 2670 is based at the Greenville School on Glendale Road in Edgemont.  At 3pm pick up at Greenville School on Glendale Rd in Edgemont, cars are supposed to wait in the car line for curbside pick up of their children. A line usually develops beginning at 2:50 pm and continues up Glendale Rd. Many parents/caregivers disregard the rules and saftey of others, and will pass to get to the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. Sometimes cars are facing one another head on. Sometimes three cars will manage to squeeze between the two lanes, endangering those on the already very narrow sidewalk. Despite the Principal sending out a notice that this is unacceptable, drivers continue to behave in this dangerous conduct.  The scouts, most who are 10-11 years old,  have taken photos of many cars passing, some have even captured the school bus engaging in passing. The girls of troop 2670 wanted to have a sign put up  that states "no passing"...possibly a fine to go with it! The girls made a petition and obtained many signatures, including the Principal's.

The Scouts organized a lobbying initiative and persuaded the Greenburgh police department to agree to install the sign. A video interview featuring the girls and their story will be shown at the Greenburgh Town Board meeting this Wednesday night at 7:30 PM.  I think the scouts are role models. Instead of learning about government they participated in the process. They were able to get results, through their effective advocacy.

In recent years the town has been trying to encourage young people to become more involved in government by actually getting involved in the processes of government. We have an internship program. This summer students will be working on an initiative to promote organic recycling. The students also will be involved in creating a new website/blog --highlighting scholarship opportunities available to students who need financial assistance.  A student news network provides students with the opportunity to air their comments about local issues and to share news stories with the public.  If students are interested in taking on a cause and learning how to lobby for legislation or policy changes (becoming activists)- please e mail me pfeiner@greenburghny.com or Judith Beville at  jbeville@greenburghny.com. We will provide students with tips --helping them learn the legislative process.
