Preparing for the rain/wind storm...Governor coming to Greenburgh Mon..work session..fun activities
Release Date: March 12, 2010

PREPARING FOR THE RAIN/WIND STORM...

The town is preparing for the rain and wind storm that we anticipate to hit our region this weekend. Crews have been checking catch basins, brooks, normal flooding areas and we have been trying to be proactive to minimize flooding.   For example, we just finished checking E Hartsdale Ave and found no obstructions visible. However, if there is a major storm we won't be able to prevent all flooding from happening. If there are power outages, road closures I will advise residents who subscribe to this e list  of the problem areas and what we're doing to address the problem  (as I did during the recent snow storm). I can also be reached at pfeiner@greenburghny.com; 914-438-1343 (cell)...478-1219 (home) or at 993-1540 (office) during the evening and weekend hours. If warming centers or shelters have to be opened up, we will advise you where they are.
HOW CAN YOU BE PROACTIVE???  If there is a catch basin near your house and you see debris near it - you can help reduce flooding by clearing the debris from the catch basin.
Please see the following release from CON ED.

CON ED IS PREPARING FOR THE RAIN AND WIND STORM..
Con Edison is closely monitoring the rain and wind storm that is expected to hit our region starting tonight.  The company is preparing crews and extra personnel to respond quickly and efficiently in the event of any power outages.
Expected high winds and heavy rain could drive trees into power lines and knock out electricity.  In addition, extensive flooding could damage underground electrical equipment in low-lying areas, which could cause customers to lose power.
Con Edison will have additional customer service representatives, electrical and construction crews, along with tree-clearing crews working around the clock to respond to customers and power outages that may occur.
Customers are urged to call Con Edison immediately to report any outages at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). Customers can also report power interruptions or service problems as well as view service restoration information online at www.conEd.com and on their cell phones and PDAs.  When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.
In the event of severe outages, primary distribution feeders will be restored first, with the highest priority given to lines that supply the most customers out of service.  Next, the crews will restore secondary facilities, such as transformers and secondary cables, again with highest priority given to lines supplying the most customers out of service.  Individual services, lines serving a single home, will be restored as crews become available.
Con Edison offers the following tips to prepare for a storm:
  1. If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them.  Treat all downed wires as if they are live.  Never attempt to move or touch them with any object.  Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.  Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately.  If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
  2. If your power goes out, turn off all lights and appliances to prevent overloaded circuits when power is restored.  Leave at least one light switch in the on position to alert you when power has been restored.
  3. Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios or televisions are in working order. Use candles and oil lamps with care.  Also, make sure you have a supply of extra batteries.  Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.
  4. Avoid opening your freezer to see if food is still frozen.  Every time you open the door, room-temperature air enters and speeds the thawing process.  Most fully loaded freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 36 to 48 hours; half-full freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 24 hours.
REMINDER---GOVERNOR DAVID PATTERSON WILL BE MEETING WITH TAXPAYERS ON MONDAY AT NOON AT THE THEODORE YOUNG COMMUNITY CENTER TO DISCUSS THE STATE BUDGET. THIS MEETING IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. DOORS OPEN AT 11. THE THEODORE YOUNG COMMUNITY CENTER IS LOCATED ON MANHATTAN AVE. HEAR THE GOVERNOR...ASK YOUR QUESTIONS...
