Storm update--what needs to be done...
Release Date: February 27, 2010

I received the following e mail from the Commissioner of Public Works discussing the remaining work that has to be done re: snow removal.
We are sorry for the inconveniences.
PAUL FEINER
Supervisor and Town Board members,
The highway department, with assistance from the water department, sanitation and parks departments worked throughout the day to clear downed trees and limbs from Town Roads.  Over 50 streets were closed at one time earlier today.  As of 10 PM Thursday over 30 roadways remain closed pending word from Con Ed that the dangerous wires are cleared and it is safe for DPW to enter and clear debris. Among roads still closed pending clearance from ConEd are Old Colony Road, Birchwood Lane, Longview Drive, South Road, Tennyson, 9A,  Many roads were opened by 5 PM from downed trees, but still remain to be cleared of snow.  The delay to clearing snow is because much of our available manpower switched from snow clearing tree removal as the priority was to remove the threat to safety.
At this time all crews are preparing to again plow all roads that can safely be navigated.  The operation will begin after 11 PM when most drivers will be off of the roadways and continue through the night.  Cars left on a roadway hampering the clearing will be towed.
Unfortunately, the final snow plow work will also deposit significant amount of snow back into recently shoveled driveways and walkways.  While the frustration of many residents that will again have the front of their driveways plowed in is understood, our primary job to clear roadways for the public safety must be performed.
It is hoped that roadways now blocked due to downed trees tangled with live wires will be cleared during the night, the reality is such that come Saturday morning some roads will remain blocked and not plowed.  We cannot risk lives by working on trees tangled with potentially live wires.
I assure the Board and residents that we are doing the best we can with resources available to rectify the situation and return our streets to normal.
Thank you for your understanding.
