VETERANS DAY MEMORIAL AT DESANTI PLAZA, HARTSDALE TOMORROW AT 1 PM
Our new Veterans Advisory Committee is planning a Veterans Day memorial ceremony tomorrow (Veteran’s Day) at DeSanti Plaza (across from the Hartsdale train station). The ceremony begins at 1 PM. Alan Hochberg, who also chairs the Fire Consolidation Commission, is organizing the program. A girl scout troop from Hartsdale will present veterans with girl scout cookies and will read an essay on what Veteran’s Day means to them. The Fairview & Hartsdale fire districts and Greenburgh police will participate in the ceremony. This is the first of what we hope to be an annual ceremony on Veteran’s Day.
TRAGIC BICYCLE ACCIDENT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR BICYCLE RACKS ON BUSES TO PROMOTE BICYCLE SAFETY
DECEMBER 9TH TOWN BOARD MEETING—SHARE TIPS WITH TOWN BOARD ON STEPS THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROMOTE BICYCLE SAFETY
On Friday Greenburgh suffered a major loss when Merrill Cassell of Hartsdale was killed on his bicycle by a county bus. Mr. Cassell was an environmentalist and a major advocate for bicycle friendly roads. In honor and in memory of Mr. Cassell - I will ask bicycle safety advocates to attend our December 9th Town Board meeting to share ideas with the Town Board re: action steps that could be taken to increasing bicycle safety on our roads. The December 9th meeting begins at 7:30 PM.
In addition – we need to renew efforts to try to persuade the county and Liberty bus company to install bicycle racks on county buses. These racks are inexpensive and are placed on buses all over the nation and world. We need to encourage cyclists to bike on the back roads and we should provide cyclists with the ability to take their bicycles on buses that travel some of the major roads with lots of traffic like 119.
Mr. Casell was active in the community and frequently e mailed me with constructive suggestions regarding environmental issues. He will be greatly missed.
