GREENBURGH SCHOOLS ENROLLMENT UP BY 22% AN END TO BRIGHT FLIGHT FROM SCHOOL DISTRICT
And some good news about the Greenburgh school district -- an end to bright flight!
Did you know that enrollment is up in the Greenburgh Central Schools? By 22%!
A few years back there was bright flight. Now, more and more residents of Greenburgh are opting to give the school district another chance. And for good reason: An innovative Superintendent of Schools who was named one of 25 Superintendents to Watch in the country last year by the National School Public Relations Association. Parents who are more involved. Less politics and more focus on education. Terrific and dedicated administrators and teachers. A growing STEAM program and International Baccalaureate programs in our elementary schools. Top-notch technology. And community-wide engagement in numerous initiatives, including Dads Take Your Child to School Day, Parent Involvement Day, the Superintendent’s Tea, and Superintendent’s Dessert nights.
Greenburgh is the only District in Westchester County to have participated in the National Scripps Spelling Bee, sending student Harshita Shet to the national competition in Washington, DC, for the past several years. The District holds a district-wide spelling bee for contenders and in 2016, the students were so competitive that more than 74 rounds took place and 500 words were exhausted.
At the Highview School in Hartsdale, students entered a national robotics competition, using Dot and Dash robots and learning how to program their robots for the competition.
Woodlands High School has a 93 percent graduation rate, and the Class of 2016 was offered a combined total of more than $5 million in academic scholarships from some of the country’s top colleges and universities.
The High School’s innovative WISE program, around for many years, encourages seniors to work on a year-long community service project that culminates with a public presentation of their findings. WISE has been adapted and duplicated by school districts around the country.
Woodlands Middle School, an International Baccalaureate School, offers language classes in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
I have watched this community come together for its kids – and it’s been remarkable to watch the transformation.
And the proof is in those enrollment numbers:
STUDENTS ENROLLED IN 2016: 2,380
STUDENTS ENROLLED 2015: 2,013
STUDENTS ENROLLED 2014: 2,000
STUDENTS ENROLLED IN 2010: 1,860
An increase of 520 students, or close to 22 percent, is something to be proud of.
As they like to proudly say in Greenburgh Central, #wearegreenburgh.
