I have received requests from residents who have asked about the status of the vacant property on Secor Road across from the Ferncliff Cemetery, land also owed by Ferncliff. This has been a controversial issue in the town. The subject property owned by Ferncliff Cemetery is zoned single family residential. Ferncliff desires to use this land for cemetery purposes and has proposed building a caretaker’s residence and storage facility for its maintenance vehicles on that part of the site closest to Secor Road. It has also not ruled out use of the parcel for burial purposes. Residents are concerned that the cemetery could expand to residential areas.
The Zoning Board of Appeals recently ruled that use of the parcel for cemetery purposes is prohibited by Zoning Ordinance, but Ferncliff has filed an action in court seeking to overturn that decision and permit it to proceed with building its proposed structure. That action is presently pending in the courts.
