GREENBURGH HEALTH CENTER NOW IS PART OF WIC PROGRAM--PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE CHECKS TO PURCHAES FOOD AND MANY NUTRITION AND EDUCATION BENEFITS
The Greenburgh Neighborhood Health Center had a ceremony this morning announcing a new and very exciting program: the Health Center, located at 295 Knollwood Road (near the library) will now participate in the WIC PROGRAM. WIC offers nutrition, education, breastfeeding support, referrals and a variety of nutritious foods to low income pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5 to promote and support good health. WIC improves the health of pregnant women, new months and their infants and children. The foods provided through WIC are a good source of nutrients often missing from the diets of women and young children. WIC participants have longer, healthier pregnancies and fewer premature births.
To qualify one must be a pregnant woman; an infant or child up to five years old; a mother of a baby up to six months old; or a breastfeeding mother of a baby up to 12 months old. Eligible participants do not have to be US citizens but they must be a resident of NY State. And, they must meet eligibility guidelines or receive benefits from food stamps, Medicaid or temporary assistance for needy families. Judith Watson is executive director of the Health Center.
Those enrolled receive monthly checks to purchase nutritious foods for low income families with young children. For more information call 989 7600. Hours of operation of the Health Center: Monday-Wednesday: 9 AM to 4:30 PM...Thursday: 11 AM to 6:30 PM...Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
