New location for Sunday's meeting on Con Ed tree cutting/toping
Release Date: May 18, 2007

The Sunday, May 20th meeting regarding Con Ed tree cutting/topping has been changed to the Court Room in HastingsMunicipalBuilding, on Maple Ave– up the street from the train station. The meeting begins at 3:00 PM. As a result of the recent power outages, Con Ed has embarked on a program of tree cutting and removal affecting trees growing along the sides or under distribution power lines.

Can Con Ed override municipal rules/regulations concerning tree cutting? I have asked the Town Board to discuss this matter at our work session this coming Tuesday at 3:30 PMat Town Hall. We will invite the NYS Public Service Commission to participate in the meeting. The Board may consider taking follow up actions at the conclusion of the meeting.

A citizens group is urging Con Ed to provide localities with the ability to retain the services of an independent arborist (that Con Ed would pay for) to ensure that only trees that should be cut are cut. We want to make sure that the health of the trees being trimmed is protected and believe that flooding dangers should also be considered during the process. Con Ed should be proactive when it comes to taking steps to reduce power outages. They should cut down trees that are dead or dying or pose a possibility of creating power outages. They should protect those trees that are not in danger of causing harm to the community. That’s why an independent arborist is important.
