Con Ed representatives will be meeting with me this coming week to discuss their tree clearing efforts. I will invite a representative of the Conservation Advisory Committee to attend the meeting. I wrote to the company expressing concern about the clear cutting of trees on Ridge Road and Sprain -- which has changed the character of the community.
I just learned that they also have clear cut the buffer strip behind the Mount Joy Transformer. The trees looked hardy and robust. One residential neighborhood turned into a Central Avenue road front property with a slash of 20 trees.
There are other neighborhoods that will see a significant number of trees coming down in the coming weeks and months. Con Ed is taking this action as a result of last years power outages. It was determined that a major reason for the power outages was caused by trees falling down.
I support Con Ed's efforts to be proactive, to take steps to reduce the possibility of significant power outages occuring in the future. However, I feel that if Con Ed feels that it is necessary to clear cut trees from a neighborhood that they should replant smaller trees ( that will not grow tall enough to impact the power lines) to replace the trees that are cut.
We need to keep the green in Greenburgh! I would appreciate it if e list subscribers would advise me of other locations where there has been significant clear cutting of trees.
