HAPPY 100th birthday to Union Baptist Church
Release Date: November 10, 2014

Union Baptist Church, located on Manhattan Ave, will be celebrating their 100th birthday anniversary this Friday night with an anniversary gala.  The church has played an important role in the history of the town for many years. In 1914 Reverend Willis Coles organized the congregation. Over the years the church has done more than serve the spiritual needs of their growing church- now more than 650 families. They have organized after school, job readiness programs. The Jobs for Life program offers job readiness for young men who were placed under the church's supervision by the Greenburgh Town Court. The Greenburgh Older Youth Initiative is an impressive program offering youth training in light home repairs.   The church has helped the hungry --thanks to their soup kitchens.  They have been involved in helping promote domestic violence awareness, college tours and health and fitness. Another interesting program: helping occupants of the Bedford Women's Prison and their children, support of the Children's Village boys cottage and so much more.  Dr. Verlin D Williams, who has been  pastor of Union Baptist Church for 20 years, led a successful effort to expand the church (construction was completed a few years ago)  and the congregants are now involved in an effort for another expansion initiative: a Community Life Center.  Many members of the church are involved in community activities and have served on appointed Boards and Commissions.

Happy 100th  birthday Union Baptist Church.
