DON'T THROW LETTER FROM NYS DEPT OF TAXATION AWAY IF YOU WANT TO RECEIVE STAR
Release Date: October 09, 2013

My wife and I just received our registration letter from the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance informing us that WE MUST REGISTER FOR STAR IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE RECEIVING THE STAR TAX BREAKS. Most residents of Greenburgh have received the letter from the state in the past few days or should receive it within the next day or so.

The letter we received was addressed to property owners (not personalized). I am concerned that some people will throw the letter out by mistake.

One MUST REGISTER by December 31 to continue receiving STAR property tax exemptions. Senior citizens receiving ENHANCED STAR DO NOT NEED TO REGISTER. The STAR exemption is available for owner occupied, primary residences where the combined income of resident owners and their spouses is $500,000 or less.

This is a NYS requirement. The town is not involved in the registration process.

If you misplaced the registration form you can call 518 457 2036. If you need more info visit www.tax.nygov. To complete the form (which only takes a few minutes) you need a STAR code, the social security number of all owners of the property, whether the combined income of owners and spouses was less than $500,000 and info about any residency based exemptions in other states received by any of the resident owners.
