Fairview Board elections today---please vote! Vikki Simmons is running against Greenburgh resident Brian Montgomery for a seat on the five-commissioner board.. Voting takes place between 5 and 9 p.m. at one of two places: Fairview Fire Headquarters, 19 Rosemont Blvd., or Fairview Fire Station No. 2, 290 Worthington Road.
Usually, few people vote in fire district elections. I am reaching out to state lawmakers and will suggest that they change the election date for all fire district elections in the state to either the November elections or school board elections --when more people would participate. Having elections when you know that few people will participate is not democracy. The date of elections is not set by the individual fire districts but by NY State lawmakers.
I also believe that the law should require fire districts to allow for absentee balloting if voters are away. This is the holiday season--and some voters are out of town, decreasing voter participation. Last year, during the contested Hartsdale fire district elections, some people complained that they could not vote by absentee ballot.
