Richard Borkow, MD (village historian of Dobbs Ferry) is encouraging residents to participate in the Road to Freedom Walk through Dobbs Ferry this Sunday, August 17. The walk begins at 1 PM at the corner of Ashford and Southfield Avenues, one block west of the Saw Mill River Parkway overpass. George Washington and his horse will trace the route followed by the Continental Army on August 19, 1781 when they took the first steps of Washington’s bold and secret march of more than 400 miles to Yorktown, Virginia. Washington’s March from Dobbs Ferry to Virginia was of great consequence to the fate of our nation for it led to victory two months later at Yorktown and to the end of the Revolutionary war. Special guest: Alexander Dobbs: Continental Army surgeon.
At 2 pm, following the walk, enjoy the program of music of the 18th century, spirited orations, historical skit, awards to essayists and refreshments at the Mead House, 12 Elm Street, home of the Dobbs Ferry historical society. The walk will take place rain or shine. In case of rain we will gather at the embassy club, 60 Palisade Street after the walk for the other commemorative activities.There will be 18th century music, played by two skilled fife players, a drummer and a violinist.
