Con Ed/tree cutting legislation passed by Town Board
Release Date: June 19, 2007

The Greenburgh Town Board unanimously passed legislation today that I introduced last month that will regulate how and when Con Edison can cut down trees on private and public rights-of-way in unincorporated Greenburgh.

We have an obligation and the authority to take an environmental look at the tree cutting Con Edison is doing and a responsibility to take action.

Con Edisonwill be required to replant trees under certain circumstances when a home owner or the Town requires it. Replanting would be necessary as trees in certain areas are responsible for protecting our Town against soil erosion, preventing floods, and removing CO2 from the air. The law is designed to work cooperatively with Con Edison to help prevent weather-related power outages.

We can not allow Con Edison to cut trees in Greenburgh based on economic decisions. This law is critical to provide clean air and prevent flooding.
