FLOODING UPDATE--180 E HARTSDALE AVE RESIDENTS EVACUATED TO MULTIPURPOSE BLDING, RDS CLOSED
Release Date: April 16, 2007

About 6 residents of 180 E Hartsdale Ave will be evacuated to the town park multipurpose center -- the first time the multipurpose center has been used for an evacuation. This highlights the need for emergency generators in town buildings that could be used for evacuations in the event of power outages/emergencies (we will be installing an emergency generator at Town Hall this year, generators will be placed in other buildings in the future).
I received a call from the Deputy Fire Chief who advised that stores on E Hartsdale Ave (the drug store to Harry's) had flooding in the basement. It's possible that these stores/businesses may be forced to close down for a number of days --causing serious financial damage for the merchants/businesses.
I am requesting the Town Board & police chief not to ticket residents of E Hartsdale Ave who park their cars on the ave during the day tomorrow. Due to the heavy flooding, cars from the apartments had to be moved to the avenue.  PAUL FEINER
STATEMENT FROM CHIEF KAPICA
Flooding in the Town has been pretty bad requiring that we shut down several major roads.  Presently, Central Avenue is closed from the 4 Corners to South Washington Avenue; Jackson Avenue is closed at Old Jackson; Nepperhan Avenue in North Elmsford is closed and I just have been advised that 9A in the area of Warehouse Lane has also been closed.  Babbitt Court is flooded but it has not, as yet, been necessary to evacuate anyone.  Both the Saw Mill and Bronx River Parkways are also closed.  We were advised by Con Edison that it would be necessary to evacuate 180 East Hartsdale Avenue as water was entering the basement and they were fearful it would reach the electric service boxes requiring that the power be shut off.  The Fire Department is there and for the time being they must be keeping up with the flooding since the evacuation has been put off.  We have opened the Recreation Building at the Town Park in the event evacuation is necessary.  Many jurisdictions throughout the county have declared local states of emergency and resources (buses for transporting residents, Red Cross) are not available.  If necessary, we will be making transports using our own bus.  Although the flooding is pretty extreme, we have not had to rescue anyone at this point.  The National Weather Service forecast indicates rain, although not as heavy as earlier, until about 1:00 a.m., when the steady rain will turn to showers.  I will keep you updated if things change and will be in to work early in the morning.  Chief Kapica
