SAT/College Preparation Camp and BizCamp proposed in 2007 budget...
Release Date: October 27, 2006

The Summer Youth Achievement Program..SAT/College Preparation Camp and BizCamp

I will be releasing my proposed budgetto the Town Boardon Monday. The following is a new initiative that I will be recommending to the Town Board. If you have any comments about the proposal you are invited to share your thoughts on our new blog: www.pfeiner.blogspot.com.

A community briefing about the proposal will take place on Wednesday, November 15th at 7 PMat GreenburghTown Hall, 177 Hillside Ave, Greenburgh.     PAUL FEINER

Over the years Greenburgh has had outstanding camp programs for our youth. We fund recreation camps, camps for the disabled, a police summer youth camp, and operation Crossroads, which provides youth, 14 years old, with a hands on experience in preparation for the working world. We have sponsored a teen travel camp for children between 7-9th grade, providing older kids with trips to various cultural and recreation places.

Many of our residents move to Greenburgh because of our youth programs and schools. In this year’s proposed budget I am suggesting that the town expand our camp programs by providing high school students with an insight into college life. The Greenburgh Summer Youth  Achievement Program will offer participants small, college style seminars incorporating SAT and college preparation courses, guest lecturers, field trips, role playing and group projects.

One component of the SAT/college preparation camp provides high school students with a grade free course to prepare for the verbal and math portions of the SAT. The course is designed to provide information about the current format of the SAT and to instruct students in test taking techniques to help them realize their full potential. Each student receives an SAT textbook from Princeton Review, Princeton Test Prep, Sample SAT exam given as practice test and progress report.

The college prep component of this camp will teach students how to get into college and will provide instruction on all parts of the college admissions process. There will be tutoring on preparing for college admissions essays; college admissions guidance – which schools to apply to, how the process works, funding and financing their education, mock interviews.

Some communities around the nation have offered students the opportunity to enroll in BizCamps. The proposed budget, also a part of the parks and recreation budget, includes funding for Greenburgh’s first BizCamp.  They will learn how to think critically about businesses. They will develop a business plan that brings the learning to the practical. Students must read, do math, think critically and develop a meaningful business plan.  Students have the opportunity to develop a business plan and to earn money on some of their business ideas through trading games and exercises.

This camp will work with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). We hope that this summer camp will eventually lead to the establishment of a student run storefront.

Funding for the camp:

The Greenburgh Summer Youth Achievement program, which consists of the SAT and college preparation course, is a three week program. I am recommending that the tuition for participants be $450 for a three week program. Campers who meet certain income criteria will be eligible for full  tuition. The cost of this program is $57,850. However, tuition paid for by 12 campers, will bring the town contribution to $52,450. This program will be contracted out to Westchester RISE, founded by Sonja Brown, District Family Outreach and Information Coordinator for the Central 7 School district. We are working in partnership with WestchesterCommunity College. This initiative will be funded in the B budget and will be open to residents of unincorporated Greenburgh. However, if there are available openings we will accept residents who live in the villages provided that the full costs of the program are paid for.

The BizCamp is a six week program for 20 students. 10 will be eligible for full or partial tuition.  Tuition will be $600 per student. The total cost of the program is $21,250. The town costs will be $15,250.

WestchesterCommunity Collegehas already committed to $10,000 in in kind space and services for the SAT/college prep program. The Westchester Federal Credit Union will provide each student participating in the SAT/College SAT camp course a $50 account award upon completion of the program.
