Recycling still on today---do good , volunteer --be a role model
Release Date: December 05, 2018

Although today is a national day of mourning for former President George Bush, Greenburgh Town Hall will be open and recycling has not been cancelled.  We encourage residents to do good, to get involved in the community.  President Bush, among other accomplishments, will be remembered for starting the Points of Light initiative which encouraged local and community volunteerism.  Another positive initiative that President Bush deserves to be remembered for was the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which, according to today's Wall Street Journal "gave millions of people the chance to achieve economic independence. The costs of compliance were in some cases high, but the long terms benefits of giving the disabled access to businesses and public spaces have outweighted those costs."

Speaking personally -when I was a Westchester County Legislator a woman from Hastings, Margaret Shewmake volunteered in my office. She was blind, disabled, confined to a wheelchair. And - spent the last 8 years of her life visiting homeless individuals at area hotels (the Howard Johnson's near the Greenburgh Library at that time was used as a homeless shelter). She motivated eight individuals to get off welfare. She, her husband and health care aide even drove the homeless to their jobs. Her husband drove.   Attached please find a letter that I have hung up in my office from President Bush honoring Margaret for her efforts.

On another matter---our 9-11 living history initiative

Yesterday afternoon I met with the student council of Dobbs Ferry High and talked about our 911 living history initiative.  We had a meeting of our 9-11 committee two nights ago and are preparing to start interviewing survivors, first responders and those impacted by the tragedies of 9-11. The living history interviews will be aired on public access TV and given to libraries and schools. We want history to record the impact that the 9-11 tragedy had on local residents.  One of the students has a father who was a first responder during 911. I asked her if she would interview her father for our initiative and she said she will ask.

At our meeting earlier this week a suggestion was made to involve students. This was a follow up to an excellent suggestion.  If you were impacted by 9-11 or if your son/daughter would like to get involved in this important initiative let me know.
