30 GREENBURGH STUDENTS GRADUATED FROM POLICE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP-INTERACTED WITH DA, SECRET SERVICE
Release Date: August 17, 2017

GREENBURGH POLICE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP –AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ITS POTENTIAL AS A CAREER.

Thanks to the Town of Greenburgh and the Lanza Foundation, the Greenburgh Police Department 2017 Summer Youth Program had another successful year.

After receiving over seventy applications for enrollment in this years program, we were able to accommodate a total of thirty boys and girls.

The program is modeled after a police academy, where youngsters are placed in settings similar to that experienced by police recruits.  The six-week course consisted of physical training and classroom instruction in law and other related topics.  Guest lecturers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, District Attorney’s Office, the United States Secret Service and other agencies representatives within the Westchester County Criminal Justice System presented an overview of their agency’s operation.

Campers were given demonstrations by specialized police units such as the Greenburgh Police Special Operations Unit. Your children attended field trips to local courts, the New York City Police Department Training Academy and other criminal justice institutions. Our youth attended a two day trip to the Washington D.C. area. Here they were able to visit numerous establishments that civilians are often not allowed. They took tours of the Reflecting Pool, Arlington National Cemetery, Smithsonian and the National Law Enforcement Memorial, where all the law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty are memorialized.

The Campers also visited the 9/11 Memorial in New York City and were briefed on the tragedy that occurred on that day,

Contemporary issues such as alcohol and drug abuse were also addressed.

Students participated in various role-play scenarios, which illustrated the practical everyday problems faced by law enforcement officers.  Campers also received instruction in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.

The goal of this program was to expose your son or daughter to various law enforcement careers while developing academic ability, self-esteem and team building skills.

Campers come away from the program with meaningful skills and a better understanding of the criminal justice system and its potential as a career.  Police Community Relationships are one of the most significant barriers facing police officers. That is why positive police community relations are critical for active crime prevention, officer safety and successful police citizen relationships.  The police youth program is one of the most successful initiatives  of our community affairs unit, headed by Sergeant Norman Hall.  We are proud of the excellent interaction between young people and the police. We have even hired former graduates of the police camp as police officers years after they graduated. The experiences the students have had motivated and inspired them to go into law enforcement.
