All Around Irvington

Celebrate Irvington creates a day of fun, history, music and food in the historic Village of Irvington on Father’s Day!

Old fashioned community festival offers activities for all ages…
The Village of Irvington announced today the event line-up for Celebrate Irvington, the 4thannual Historic Main Street Festival in the nationally recognized Irvington Historic District.

Activities include a free, old-fashioned historic trolley tour, guided history walks, classic car meet-up, historic McVickar House and Tiffany Reading Room tours, vintage Village film in the Irvington Town Hall Theater, a farmers market, local musicians and artists and hands-on art, a kids’ musical theater, genealogy talks, delicious food, great restaurants (including waterfront dining) as well as face painting and balloon fun. Two waterfront Parks.

New this year, descendants of Village founding fathers – the Odell and the Dutcher families – will share Revolutionary War tales at a local Main Street business, DoctorMac. Russ Dutcher and Charles O’Toole will recount American Revolution adventures discovered through extensive family history sleuthing.

“I’ll recount for visitors Captain Dutcher’s probable link to a secret spy ring and also talk through how to use ancestry.com,” Dutcher explained in a recent interview. What today is the Village of Irvington was, in 1777, part of a lawless no-man’s land. Defending the tenant farmers here fell to young men like John Odell, a Patriot guide who George Washington relied on, and Captain William Dutcher, who became a leader in the local militia unit. Dutcher Street, named after the Dutcher family, is a narrow side street in the Irvington Historic District, intersecting Main.

Irvington Historical Society docents will take visitors on an old-fashioned historic trolley tour, sponsored by Sunnyside Federal, where they will ride back in time and learn about the Village’s interesting history. Guided walks during the day will also provide an opportunity for visitors to learn from history buffs and locals about what makes Irvington today a unique small town and what brought famous names – Tiffany, Astor and of course Irving, to live here. The trolley will loop throughout the Village, starting and stopping in front of historic McVickar House.

The Hudson River was a significant factor in the history of Irvington and new this year, Deputy Mayor Connie Kehoe reports, is the family-friendly Magical Wandering River, an original chalk-art sidewalk happening. Conceived by Nina Rossi, Art and Music Director for the Irvington Public Schools, and enthusiastically supported by parent volunteer Robert Firpo-Capiello, along with the regional nonprofit Riverkeeper, and small business owner Pia Salk of Found at 123 Main, the project will bring kids and community members together to learn about the history, ecology and artistic legacy of “the river that flows both ways.”

With the knowledge that on Father’s Day a variety of attractions, and plenty of good food, can make for a fun day, local classic car and truck owners are joining Celebrate Irvington, providing photo ops for fathers, families and history lovers. Old cars are also “on display” in a Vintage Irvington film from 1972, shown in the Irvington Town Hall Theater, built in 1902.

The landmarked Burnham Building, now the Irvington Library, will host the very modern live professional theater group See The Wish/Onstage, just steps from the Metro North train station.

Education Meets Celebration in a New Hudson River Chalk-Art Project
Join us on Sunday, June 18 as kids, parents, educators, and environmentalists create The Magical Wandering River, an original chalk-art “happening” on the sidewalks of Irvington’s Main Street.

Participants and volunteers will meet outside Main Street School, 101 Main Street, Irvington, NY 10533, from 9am to 11am to learn about the history, ecology, and artistic legacy of “the river that flows both ways,” pick up complimentary chalk, and help draw The Magical Wandering River as part of Celebrate Irvington, an Historic Main Street Festival.

The Magical Wandering River chalk-art project is a collaboration among the Village of Irvington, Riverkeeper, Irvington Union Free School District organized by the Art Department, Found at 123 Main Street and community volunteers.

Note: Fun for all ages. Children under 12 need parent/guardian. Project may be adjusted due to weather and number of participants.
