ROCHAMBEAU HEADQUARTERS / HART'S BROOK RAMBLE
Release Date: September 15, 2005

ROCHAMBEAU HEADQUARTERS / HART'S BROOK NATURE PRESERVE RAMBLE ON SATURDAY,SEPTEMBER 17th  AT 2:00PM

The Greenburgh Greenway Committee will host an easy to moderate walk on wooded trails on Saturday afternoon,September 17th as a local event of the 6th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble. The first segment will be a visit to the historic Odell House property in Hartsdale, where French General Rochambeau used the early 1700's tenant farmhouse as his headquarters for six weeks in the summer of 1781, while George Washington and his army camped less than a mile away. After a tour of the property, Robert J. Stackpole, President of the New York Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, will give a talk on what life must have been for the soldiers in the adjoining French and American camps at that Philipsburg encampment in those six weeks prior to the march to Yorktown, Virginia. The talk will be held outside the old farmhouse since the structure is undergoing restoration and not yet open to the public. The guided walk will continue through the beautiful grounds of the Hart' s Brook Nature Preserve, the former Gaisman Estate, where you will learn about the history of the property and plans for a Greenway Heritage Trail that will connect to other important sites.

Participants should follow directional signs along Ridge Road in Hartsdale to the main entrance of Ridge Road County Park and meet the Ramble Guides at the first parking lot closest to the entrance circle at 2:00pm on 9/17. Pre-register by telephone at (914)993-1641 or by e-mail to Frank Jazzo, Greenburgh Town Historian at fsjazz2004@yahoo.com.
