EDGEMONT PETITION FOR INCORPORATION FILED..MEETING AT HIGHVIEW SCHOOL WED TO DISCUSS IMPACTS
Release Date: February 27, 2017

On Monday morning some Edgemont residents filed  a petition seeking to incorporate Edgemont as a village within the town. Under the law the Town Supervisor is charged with the responsibility of determining whether sufficient signatures (as required by NYS law)  were collected. If the answer is yes - a referendum will be held --sometime in June.

Under New York State law, residents of the hamlet of Edgemont are the only voters who will determine whether Edgemont will incorporate as a village.  Residents of the rest of the town will  be impacted because unincorporated Greenburgh will lose significant revenue (the Hartsdale Neighbors Association estimates over 17 million dollars a year). The average resident of Edgemont pays 16% of their total tax bill to the town of Greenburgh for municipal services. The rest of their tax bill goes to the school district, county and fire district.

A meeting is being held on Wed sponsored by the Hartsdale Neighbors Association to discuss  impacts/options for the unincorporated section of town in the event that voters in Edgemont vote to incorporate.   I also plan to form a task force made up of residents of unincorporated Greenburgh to work with department heads to review option in the event that Edgemont voters decide to incorporate. These options could include possible service cuts.   It’s possible that Edgemont may wish to contract for town services. The Task Force will work with department heads and recommend a fair pricing formula (cost + administrative fee).  If you are interested in serving on the task force please advise.

Between now and the referendum residents of Edgemont will have to debate whether the perceived advantages of incorporation outweigh the risks.  Residents of unincorporated Greenburgh need to discuss plans and options.
