SUPERMARKETS SHOULD GIVE EXCESS FOOD TO POOR...FOOD PANTRY IN DOBBS FERRY HELPS MANY
Release Date: January 26, 2017

At last night's Greenburgh Town Board meeting the Town Board approved a resolution urging the New York State Legislature to approve an "Excess Food Act" which would require supermarkets to make edible food available to  charities that feed the hungry.
The resolution was originally recommended by Mike Sigal, a member of the Greenburgh Conservation Advisory Council who learned of a similar law in Paris, France while visiting the City. Mr. Sigal asked the Greenburgh Conservation Advisory Council to study the issue of disposition of excess edible food. They found that annually 60 - 100 million tons of edible food are disposed of in the United States, primarily to landfills, while an estimated 50 million Americans, including nearly 16 million children, donot have sufficient food to eat.  The CAC also found that  this national humanitarian disgrace also has adverse environmental consequences:approximately 25% of the water used in the U.S. goes to produce food which ends up in landfills, and disposing of excess food requires fossil fuels (gasoline) to transport and then creates methane emissionsand greenhouse gas emissions when deposited in landfills; and

The Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry at South Presbyterian Church came into being around 2011 at the request of a local organization by the name of Spring Community Partners.  They are a group of parents and others who look out for the needy in the Dobbs Ferry schools.

They alerted our church that 14.5% of the students in the Dobbs Ferry schools qualified for a free or reduced-fee lunch.  They wondered what these children’s families did about feeding their children other meals, and what the families did about food on holidays and vacations.

In response, our church formed the pantry.  At this point it is an effort not just of South Church, but of many other people in the community, and it includes volunteers from all the Rivertowns.

Our pantry serves the food-insecure residents of Ardsley, Irvington and Dobbs Ferry (Hastings has its own pantry).  We also include people from the unincorporated section of Greenburgh, served by the Greenburgh 7 School District.

We’re open at South Church every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 12:00, and on the last Wednesday of the month we’re also open from 5:30 to 7:00.  Through the years we’ve been helped by cash donations and food donations by many local churches, synagogues, clubs, schools and concerned individuals.

If anyone needs more information about the pantry, please feel free to contact Co-Directors Molly Rodriguez or Lyn McLean at 914-693-0473 or at dobbsferrypantry@gmail.com
