Committee of Board of Legislators to discuss ban on gun shows on county property at 1 PM Tuesday
Release Date: January 02, 2017

There were two tragic gun shootings during the holiday season in Mount Vernon. The city of Mount Vernon mourned the loss of a 13 year girl who was unintentionally shot and killed in broad daylight on Saturday, December 31st. A few days before that incident there was another gun shooting at a Mount Vernon nightclub in Mount Vernon. An innocent man lost his life.  These incidents highlight the fact that guns kill people—intentionally and unintentionally.

Shortly before these murders took place County Executive Rob Astorino announced that the Westchester County gun show at the County Center would be held during the weekend of January 21-22.  Gun shows haven’t been held at the County Center since the Sandy Hook massacre four years ago.  The Democratic caucus of the Board of Legislators has introduced legislation to prohibit gun shows on county property.  People have the right to purchase guns (that's the 2nd amendment) but those who support gun shows at the County Center  don't think the county should encourage the culture of guns. Most people who attend gun shows are law abiding citizens. But--all we need is one person who uses a gun inappropriately -- negligently or intentionally -someone could lose their life.  The proposed ban would not ban gun shows at privately owned conference centers.

A committee of the Board of Legislators, according to former Greenburgh Town Councilman Steve Bass, will be meeting this Tuesday January 3rd at 1 PM at the County Office Building (8th floor, 148 Martine Ave, White Plains. People can't speak at the meeting but a turnout of residents is helpful.

You can also highlight your views by e mailing the County Executive at ceo@westchestergov.com.

The Legislature is currently scheduled to vote on  a proposed ban on January 9th at 7 PM at the 8th floor of the County Office Building. The Legislature provides allows residents to speak for a limited period of time.  I'm away this Tuesday but will speak on the 9th.
