GREENBURGH HIRES THIRD FORMER GRADUATE OF GREENBURGH POLICE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP AS POLICE OFFICER
CAMP, ESTABLISHED IN THE 1990s, PROVIDES TRAINING TO CHILDREN 12 TO 16 YEARS OLD AND HAS INSPIRED GRADUATES TO CHOOSE LAW ENFORCEMENT AS CAREER---
At our last meeting of the Greenburgh Town Board (this past Wednesday) the Town Board hired new officers and promoted others to the police department We also appointed our third graduate of the police summer youth camp to police officer. Craig Thomas joins former youth camp graduates. Herman Killiebrew, and Peter Schmidt as a police officer.
The police summer youth camp was started in the 1990s. Children who are 12 to 16 years old go through a mini police academy where they learned about different areas of law enforcement. The campers visited local and district courts, and meet agents from the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI and the Westchester District Attorney’s office.
They also have seen demonstrations by the county bomb squad and aviation unit, the Greenburgh and Yonkers K-9 units, the Hudson River Marine Units and the Greenburgh SWAT/Tech Rescue teams and have gone to Washington, D.C. to visit the FBI Academy, the Police Memorial Museum, Arlington National Cemetery and the Marine Corps Museum.
The goal of the program: to encourage young people to interact with law enforcement and to have a better appreciation of the responsibilities our police have. I am very proud of the fact that three of our graduates were inspired by the program and decided to become police officers. Obviously, this camp is a success and has accomplished what we set to achieve when we first established the camp. Thanks to the Lanza Family Foundation for helping to fund the program over the years. This is the kind of program we need nationally -could help improve relations between the police and youth.
