3,400 LED lights being installed...to cut streetlight energy usage 61%
Release Date: April 06, 2016

GREENBURGH TO RETROFIT 3,400 LIGHTS WITH LED STREETLIGHTS---TO REDUCE STREETLIGHT ENERGY USAGE BY 61%---

To save energy and control costs, the Town of Greenburgh is replacing all of our streetlights with more efficient LED lights.  The LED (Light Emitting Diode) light uses less electricity than the High Pressure Sodium lights and Mercury Vapor lights (cobrahead) that are currently in place across the Town and are guaranteed to the Town for 10-years.  Several years ago, under a grant program, the Town installed about 130 LED fixtures to see how they would perform.  After several years, these LED lights are still working well and provide a whiter light that many find provides better illumination than the orange glow of the older style lamps.

Over the next six months, approximately 3,400 cobrahead streetlight fixtures will be converted to energy saving, long-life LED luminaires under a $1.4 million contract with Lumen Light Solutions.  This luminaire conversion program will reduce the town’s energy usage on streetlights by 61%, or 1.5 million kilowatt hours, and will save $345,000 in energy costs each year, based upon current energy costs.   This energy savings will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,035 metric tons.

YESTERDAY I posted an advisory about the new initiative that the town of Greenburgh is involved in with Sustainable Westchester that we hope will result in lower Con Ed bills.  A resident asked me to post a clarification. Although we believe that the Con Ed bills will be lower – it’s not guaranteed.  The rate that Greenburgh and participating communities are going to get from Con EdSolutions  is a fixed amount for two years. The rates are currently less than what you pay Con Ed for.  It’s possible that Con Ed rates can be lower—although we think that over the course of two years that is unlikely.   Any resident who doesn’t want to participate can opt out of the program the town signed up for.  This is the memo the constituent sent to me….

Q: Will I save money by participating in Westchester Power?

A: Westchester Power rates will stay exactly the same every month, and are fixed at a price lower than the average rate for ConEd and NYSEG in 2015. There is no guarantee, however, that the Westchester Power fixed rates will be lower than utility rates in any given month.

The real purpose of the program, it seems, is a stabilization of payments, not necessarily any (significant) savings. I don't think that you made it clear that there may or may not be savings either on a monthly basis or in the longer term; in fact, you state, unequivocally, that there will be savings. I believe residents deserve a fair and balanced perspective on this proposed change.

 MAKE A WISH EVENT FRIDAY

Make-A-Wish Hudson® Valley will present a benefit concert of Broadway show music at 8 PM, Friday, April 8 at the historic Tarrytown Music Hall. It will help the non-profit grant wishes for more than 150 local children with life-threatening medical conditions.  For the past 30 years, the Make-A-Wish chapter has made a difference in the lives of more than 2,400 children throughout the region.

“Frank and Friends” will be headlined by legendary Broadway composer and songwriter Frank Wildhorn. Known for both his musicals and popular songs including the number one international hit song, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”—made famous by Whitney Houston – and the song “Gold”, heard at the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1999 Wildhorn became the first composer to have three Broadway musicals running on Broadway simultaneously: Jekyll and Hyde,The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War.

Appear with Wildhorn at the concert will be Rob Evan (Jekyll and Hyde, Les Miserables, Disney’s Tarzan); Jeremy Jordan (Newsies, Rock of Ages, Bonnie and Clyde) and Laura Osnes(Grease, Cinderella, Bonnie and Clyde).

Ticket prices (with all proceeds to benefit the Make-A-Wish® Hudson Valley) range from $35 to $175 and can be ordered by visiting www.tarrytownmusichall.org or by calling 877-840-0457.
