NEW! Stranger Danger and Pedestrian Safety Assemblies for elementary school kids...bicycle sunday
Release Date: May 03, 2015

A few weeks ago I read a letter to the editor in the Enterprise, a weekly newspaper that covers the river towns. Linda Leary suggested that greater emphasis be placed on teaching pedestrian safety in our schools.

The Greenburgh police department will be conducting assemblies for  Pedestrian Safety and Stranger Danger on the following dates for the month of May.
May 11  - Lee F. Jackson Elementary School (kindergarten and 1st grade) 9:30am May 12 - Highview Elementary School (2nd and 3rd Grade) 9:30am May 13 - Bailey Elementary School (Grades 4-6) 9:30

We are reaching out to other school districts and would like to encourage students to become more aware of pedestrian safety rules. I suggested another initiative --a survivor game. We could expand the teaching program and turn it into a survivor game. Members of the community, Explorer scouts, boy & girl scouts could be trained to be part of a program - they could try to trick students (come here- I have ice cream) and we'll find out who the survivors are among the children. Who is least likely among kindergarten and 1st grade students to be tricked?  I'd rather see children make a mistake in a game than in real life.  And children and adults have to look before crossing the street.

We're making progess with our efforts to build more sidewalks. Sidewalks should be built on Benedict (near Shoprite in the Tarrytown section of unincorporated Greenburgh) this year. We are finalizing plans for a sidewalk to be built near the Greenburgh Health Center which will make it safer for pedestrians to walk to and from the Health Center.  Assemblyman Tom Abinanti is working on this initiative with the town. And --we hired an independent traffic consultant to study whether sidewalks should be built on Seely, Ardsley Road, Fort Hill Road.

Today is the first day of bicycle Sunday from 10-2. 41 years ago I was chair of the Westchester County Task Force for Bikeways. I was appointed by former County Executive Al Del Bello to serve on a committee and recommended the closing of the parkway for cyclists. Can't believe it's already 41 years! Getting on my bicycle shortly and will do some cycling!
