Every time I visit the NY School for the Deaf (which is located on Knollwood Road in Greenburgh) I get so inspired. This morning I attended an assembly at the school (also known as Fanwood). The Seattle Seahawks drum line  took time out of their practicing before the Super Bowl to perform. It was an amazing experience. Even though the students can’t hear (some can’t hear at all or are very hard of hearing), the students reacted positively to the vibrations, visuals and rhythms of the drummers.  I learned a lot –was surprised how excited the children were watching the drummers perform.

The NY School for the Deaf is in desperate need for a new playground. They are looking for volunteers to help them make the playground happen. Hearing impaired children deserve to have fun too! UPDATE- SUGGESTION TO NAME TZ BRIDGE FOR PETE SEEGER…Earlier this week, after Pete Seeger’s passing, I suggested that the Tappan Zee bridge be named in honor and in memory of Pete Seeger. A few on line petitions have been created (a real grass roots effort). One of the on line petitions has been signed by more than 4,350 people. Another by close to 1,000.   The tributes to Pete are very moving. His involvement with the Hudson and with Clearwater contributed significantly to a cleaner River.

ANOTHER SUGGESTION FOR THE BRIDGE—I am reaching out to state officials and am suggesting that when the new Tappan Zee bridge is built that historical markers be placed along the bike/walk path being constructed on the bridge. The historical markers could highlight the contributions of Pete Seeger, Clearwater, the Riverkeeper, former United States Congress members Ogden Reid & Richard Ottinger (early advocates for a cleaner Hudson) and others. There could also be other markers placed on the bridge—a call for action, telling people what they could/should do in the future to make sure that the river is cleaner. The call for action boards could also provide pedestrians/cyclists with updated environmental news and progress reports re: efforts to expand mass transit on the bridge.   Pete Seeger inspired people to become environmental activists. And, the inspiration continues.
