COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS- NEW BLOG TO BE CREATED...OREGON LAW TO HELP STUDENTS PAY TUITION
Release Date: July 13, 2013

College tuition is very unaffordable to many. Town Clerk Judith Beville and I have assigned student interns working in our offices an interesting project -- they are creating a college scholarship blog. This blog will constantly be updated with college scholarships. This project will be ongoing. We hope to provide parents and students who are struggling to pay for their college tuitions with important information that will help them.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? If you have a son or daughter who was awarded a scholarship - please provide us with the information. We'll share the info with your Greenburgh neighbors. We are most interested in scholarships being offered by organizations or foundations. This blog will be updated frequently --we hope to involve parents, school districts, students in the effort to make paying for college a less stressful experience.
Please e mail info on college scholarships to pfeiner@greenburghny.com

AN INTERESTING IDEA --I THINK NYS SHOULD FOLLOW THE LEAD OF OREGON. WHAT DO YOU THINk?
Do you think that the Oregon law should be implemented by NYS? Any suggested modifications?
It’s my hope that the Governor and NY State Legislature will consider following the lead of the state of Oregon making college more affordable for students who want to pursue higher education.. The state legislature approved a very innovative law in Oregon calling for the development of a Pay It Forward pilot project, in which students could attend public colleges and universities in exchange for... 3 percent of their incomes for a set period of years after graduation:
If the implementation of this initiative is too costly- the state may wish to consider starting a pilot program at some colleges in the state or for those students who are pursuing specific careers that are needed.
This plan will provide some relief to students who are unable to translate their degree into a decent-paying job. It’s been reported that a student whose adjusted gross income is $600,000 over a 24-year span would pay $18,000 for his or her four-year degree. A student who makes $2.5 million over that same timeframe would end up paying $75,000. Someone who makes nothing at all would contribute nothing to the fund. Someone who makes a billion would contribute an astronomical amount.
Students who graduate from a two-year college would have 1.5 percent, instead of 3 percent, taken from their paychecks, according to the plan. Those who attend some college but fail to graduate would pay a pro-rated portion of their incomes
The advantage of this program: New graduates would not start their post college years with significant debt. The Pay It Forward program will encourage more young people to benefit from higher education—not to give up on higher education because of the high costs involved. Our nation needs to invest in higher education and to encourage young people to pursue their dreams.
