A plan to save the commuter bus announced
Release Date: January 06, 2004

A PLAN TO SAVE THE COMMUTER BUS ANNOUNCED---

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner announced that the lobbying effort to save the WestchesterManhattanexpress bus service received some good news. Service Bus Company has offered to take over the service if the county discontinues the run.

Feiner said that in 1982 he started the first Westchester-NY bus service called the Hartsdale Scarsdale VIP commuter club. We worked with Service Bus Company  and they provided residents with non subsidized service. The county, MTA, NYC fought the private operation and ultimately kicked the VIP club off of Central Ave, off of 5th and Madison. The county then started the current route---which is now threatened with elimination.

The following e mail was received by Feiner today from Service Bus Company.

“We can’t afford to discontinue this quality of life service,” said Feiner. Train stations do not have existing parking. The MTA needs competition. We need the bus to provide Westchesterresidents with alternate means of getting out of the city in the event of a terrorist situation or emergency like the blackout of 2003.”

LETTER ENCLOSED

Dear Mr. Feiner;

                        Thank you for returning my telephone call today.  Service Bus Company is prepared to operate the BxM-4 Bus Routes to New York Citywhen and if the Countyof Westchesterdiscontinues service

                        We are applying for Emergency Temporary Authority from the New York State Dept of Transportation in the near future.

                        We would like to co-ordinate this with the Westchester County Dept of transportation to ensure a smooth transition if they discontinue bus service.

                        I remember back in 1982 when we provided bus service for the Hartsdale-Scarsdale VIP Commuter Club and we worked together.  A few months later, WestchesterCounty started it’s own service and, with the subsidy payments, caused us to cease operations one year later.

                        The only request we would have of WestchesterCounty, if assume the service, is that they collect the State Operating Assistance Dollars from New YorkStateand pass them on to us.  These funds are available for every omnibus line in New YorkStateand must be collected by a county.  The county then passes the operating assistance dollars along to the bus companies.

                        Please give our phone numbers and email address to all concerned riders and let’s see what happens at the county level.

                        Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

                        Yours truly,

                        Sal DiPaolo

                        Vice President
